Replacing the catalytic converter on your VR6?

Our VR6 high flow cat is the performance fit! The stock catalytic converter on most VR6 vehicles is a lengthy 600 cell catalyst. While failures are infrequent, replacement with a high-flow cat yields better exhaust flow & mild HP gains. Our VR6 high flow cat uses a Magnaflow 200 cell metal cat in a spun stainless steel body. A CNC machined flange & TIG welded construction result in a perfect fit every time. Auto parts store replacement cats are guaranteed to 'pretty much' fit & basically 'work'. Why settle?

Our VR6 high flow cat is available reduced to fit the stock sleeve clamp, or 2.5" through to fit 2.5" cat-backs. A fresh OEM gasket & replacement hardware is included with every pipe. Two oxygen sensor bungs are welded in and a plug is included for the extra. OBD1 cars use the pre-cat bung. OBD2 cars use the post-cat bung. Though based on the mk3 VR6 cat, our high flow cat fits a wide range of VWs. Check out the application guide below to choose the correct cat for your vehicle.

Additional Information

Power Gains

A high flow cat won't be your ticket to 10's. However, we find this modification to be very worthwhile. All of our testing over the years has compared our test pipes to the factory cat. Using our test pipe we did a back to back test and found peak gains of 5whp and 6wtq on a normally modified all-motor VR6. Road testing of the high flow cats demonstrated power gains almost identical to the test pipes. We're obviously fans of our test pipes on the VR6, but long testing on multiple VR6s left us impressed. The raw sound and power of the VR6 with a test pipe was only slightly diminished. Hmm. Of course, individual power gains depend on the condition of the catalytic converter removed, the exhaust system used, and the condition of the motor. We wouldn't build them if they didn't work.

The Sound

Again, we're comparing our results to our long term use of test pipes and the dramatic sound difference between the stock cat and a test pipe. When we first fired up a test car we all said "wait, that's a cat?" The VR6 with a stock cat sounds muted and distant. The VR6 with a test pipe sounds like a monster. This cat lands right in the middle. The exhaust note becomes sharper & meaner. The overall volume of the exhaust increases, but not enough to cause a scene. Low rpm 'drone' inside the car is eliminated.

Legality

  • This catalytic converter is 49 state legal (excluding California)
  • Emissions compliance is the sole responsibility of the vehicle's owner.
  • May cause 'catalyst below efficiency' fault code and / or check engine light (CEL) to illuminate in the instrument cluster.

2.5" Through - Fitment Details

Our VR6 high flow cat is available in 2.5" through. This cat fits exactly like the original but lacks the reduction to stock band clamp size. This allows for a straight-through fitment when using 2.5" exhaust. Our 2.5" through cat terminates at the center of the stock band clamp. Many 2.5" cat-back exhaust systems for the mk3 VR6 have a built in reduction to the stock band clamp size. In this case, the cat-back exhaust system will need to be modified. The reduction will need to be removed, a 2.5" section of pipe added and a 2.5" band clamp added. Many cat-back exhaust systems begin at the center of the stock band clamp as 2.5". In this case no modification is required and a band clamp should be used. Due to the variances in aftermarket cat-back designs we cannot provide a 100% bolt-on 2.5" through cat for any or all aftermarket exhaust systems.
