Two varieties of oil filter flanges exist on the TDI motor. Early TDI models have both a stock oil pressure sender and a blank plug. Many newer TDI oil filter flanges have only a stock oil pressure sender. All senders & plugs have M10x1 threads. Stewart Warner gauges use 1/8" NPT sending units. Unfortunately 1/8" NPT and M10x1 are not compatible. Installation of SW oil temperature and pressure senders require a variety of adaptors.
When using SW gauges, oil temperature must be measured at the oil pan. SW's temperature sender uses 1/8" NPT threads which are not compatible with plug #15. Simply use our Universal Oil Temp Adaptor, part # 42-908 to install the SW sender in the oil pan.
To measure oil pressure you will need to use our Oil Pressure Relocation Kit, part # 42-008. Our kit will allow you to install both the SW 1/8" NPT oil pressure sender and the OEM oil pressure sender remotely. The oil pressure relocation kit will take the place of the stock oil pressure sender, #1 as shown below. The stock sender will now be located aside the SW sender 12" away from the oil filter flange where sufficient room exists.

Tools Required:
24mm Deep Socket
When installing oil sending units it is important to maintain a ground between the sending unit and the engine block. Ground is normally maintained in the threads of the sending unit. Use only 1 wrap of teflon tape on sender threads to assure no leaks or loss of ground. |
